Introducing Courtney, our Marketing Assistant

How long have you worked at The Distance?

I've been at The Distance just over a year.

How would you describe your role in one sentence?

I turn our team’s knowledge into engaging content that strengthens our brand and shows why we’re leaders in app development.

Courtney

Courtney's typical day

What’s a typical day like for you as a Marketing Assistant?

  • 8:00am - 9:30am - Log on, catch up on any messages, check our social channels and engage with our partners. I also send off any content for approval first thing to give others time to approve before the end of the day.
  • 9:30am - 10am - This is when we have Scrum, it’s our chance to catch up on where we’re up to on projects, mention any blockers, usually listen to a bad joke or two and get straight for the day.
  • 10am - 12pm - This always varies on what I have on that week, I do have recurring weekly tasks such as blog writing, blog uploading, blog repurposing, writing and creating social media for the following two weeks and weekly round up creations.
  • 12pm - 12:30pm - Lunch (usually a good soup or some Mediterranean veg, chicken and rice). I usually also put my washing out and empty the dishwasher too on my break (The beauty of WFH!)
  • 12:30pm - 4:30pm - Usually carrying on with projects from the morning, such as marketing adhoc tasks, project work or having Marketing Team meetings to go through upcoming strategy. I also schedule any approved content from that morning before I go.
  • 4:30pm - Log off, usually workout and then enjoy my evening with my husband and two Labradors!

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

I love knowing that something I’ve created has helped someone learn. I love being able to showcase our expertise and highlight what makes us so good at what we do.

Getting into the details

What inspired you to start The Distance?

I loved their ethos, and it was actually my husband (Seb, an app developer here at The Distance) who shared how great a company it is and recommended me.

How do you help promote The Distance’s expertise in app development?

We like to create guides, blogs, and whitepapers on a range of different topics throughout the app development process to help our partners and potential clients learn more about what's involved. I love it when a partner asks our team in a call about a certain topic and we already have the content written for them to learn more about.

It helps having a team full of experts who are passionate about what they do, it makes it easy to promote our expertise when we have so much knowledge internally.

How do you approach social media strategy for a tech agency?

This usually varies depending on what campaigns we have running at the time, I plan for 2 week blocks but we have a month calendar overview we run through in our Marketing Meetings. I like to create a range of campaign posts, posts promoting new blog content, statistics, case studies, ADITL’s, carousels with insights, testimonials and more. We like to have a good variety of types of content, but ALWAYS remember to promote our value first.

What’s one thing businesses should focus on when marketing their apps?

As just mentioned, businesses should promote their value the most. What's the benefit of your app? What will users get out of it? What are they interested in and what’s going to keep them using the app?

How do you balance creativity with data-driven decisions?

I rely on data to steer the strategy, but the creative side of my brain can’t resist finding a more engaging, memorable way to tell the story behind the numbers.

What’s the most challenging part of marketing for an app development agency?

Reaching the right audience! And ensuring our technical content is easy and digestible for readers who aren’t as tech-savvy as some of our team members. There are a LOT of technical words that are easy to forget that the average person wouldn’t understand, such as QA (quality assurance, aka testers).

And just for fun…

If you were a biscuit, what biscuit would you be?

I’d be a custard cream - a bit of creative flair on the outside, sweet in the middle, and reliably gets the job done.

If you weren’t in this role, what would you be doing?

It is similar but not this exact role, but content creation! Probably creating short-form videos in the outdoors, as it’s what I enjoy doing in my personal time.

Wrapping up

Courtney’s work is a huge part of how we share our knowledge, support our partners, and keep pushing ourselves to explore what great digital experiences can be. If you’ve ever read a blog, saved a carousel, or learnt something new from our content - chances are, she was behind it.
